Like many of us, Holly spent last spring walking around her neighborhood in the evenings. She started to collect flowers, seeds and branches to take back to the studio and draw. The process of looking closely at plants for hours became a profound meditation on the importance of our relationship to the natural world in times of crisis. This workshop is for all-levels and will support deep attention, rather than the creation of refined drawings. Holly will guide us through some basic drawing instruction with pencil, watercolour and pencil crayon and then a series of drawing experiences that will help us to see plant life with fresh eyes. The drawings from the workshop will be an invitation to continue to observe and record how your chosen plant changes with the seasons. Artist, Holly Schmidt explores the diversity of human relationships with the natural world. Through nature walks, sensory exercises and drawing, Schmidt immerses herself in different ecologies where ideas emerge for the creation of sculpture, installation and temporary public art works. Her work has been presented through national and international residencies and exhibitions. Schmidt is grateful to live and work in Vancouver, Canada, the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̍əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Materials: Collect a flower and/or a cutting from a tree or shrub in your neighbourhood. Be gentle with your collection. Pencil, watercolours, pencil crayons, a fine black felt marker, and heavy, smooth paper.
