The Future Has Arrived

Mural, Hastings Community Centre

We invite the members of the Hastings Sunrise community to gather and discover our native plants and the cultural history of this land we call our home. Interactive workshops on plant identification and collaborating with other artists of various mediums to help co-create a unique reference book of flora and fauna knowledge for future generations. Outdoor walks with take place at Khanahmoot aka New Brighton Beach, Hastings community park and garden, at the Sanctuary and other neighbouring parks.

We would like to bring attention into the importance of diversity; to embrace and integrate cultural distinctions and similarities. Like a reconciliation process, our intention is to create a space for collaboration and solidarity among different cultures and generations and to open a dialogue and understanding of the First People living in our communities.

The workshops will include nature walks showcasing our native plants describing cultural usage, plant identification, how to grow in their own gardens, nutritional value and some practical applications. Following the nature walks we will offer space to create either out at our chosen location or back at the community centre (weather dependent). The invitation will be to the community to share potluck, local teas, to answer and ask questions to encourage conversation and offer guidance to create their own artwork inspired by local plants and their experience out at our parks. Copies of the art will be printed to publish a botanical art book. These workshops are inclusive of all ages and cultural background. We will be showcasing the Learning Garden to allow participants with mobility challenges to access the illustrated reference book project.

The workshops will be programmed through the calendar year to layer the different stages of our native flora. We will engage with the residents at seasonal events to invite them to join us in this project.
